WGE SIC e-mentoring programme
The WGE SIC is pleased to announce the launch of its first e-mentorship programme! The programme is open to all WGE SIC members seeking to engage in a meaningful mentor/mentee relationship. Each programme will be 6 months long and the first one will run from July to December 2016. In the first instance, we plan to run one programme per year, but the frequency may change depending on the number of requests and feedback we receive.
The objective of the programme is to give mentors the opportunity to share their knowledge, experience and expertise with the mentees and provide them with feedback. The mentees can benefit from personal development, career guidance and a better understanding of the industry or the academic world.
The mentor and mentee should aim to have at least one monthly meeting for the 6 months duration of the programme. Since WGE SIC members come from all over the world, meetings are expected to be virtual and can be carried out through Skype or Lync, for instance. Mentor and mentee will decide on a mutually agreeable frequency for the meetings and length of time (e.g. 30 minutes bi-weekly or 1 hour once a month).
The mentees are expected to prepare for the meetings by identifying a few topics they would like to discuss with their mentors, so that the meetings can be productive. Mentees are encouraged to send their questions in advance to their mentors if they believe this may help facilitate the discussion. It is a good idea that mentor and mentee start with a brief introduction during the first meeting so that they can get to know each other. Mentorship is also an opportunity for mutual learning. Mentors can learn from mentees as well!
The mentorship committee matched applicants with similar interests during the summer. Applicants will be contacted via e-mail to inform them of the match. The mentorship committee will endeavour to find the best match from the applications that it receives. The number of matches will depend on the number of members that apply to participate in the programme.
At the end of the programme, participants will be asked to fill in a short questionnaire to provide feedback on their experience. This will enable us to continuously improve our programme based on the feedback we receive.
